'Promised Land’ Glennifer, NSW 2454

“We’ve all heard horror stories about building a new house haven’t we – where the costs go way over budget, the design is not as friendly as it was supposed to be, the architect or builder turns into a bullying maverick, the tradies don’t turn up, and the weather does its worst. And just to really challenge Guido, we were living in Darwin so could only come on-site for occasional face-to-face discussions.

So what did Guido do? He visited our property on the Promised Land over several months and sat in the paddock so he could measure the movement of sunlight and shadows across the block. He sent us beautiful CAD design drawings and countless ideas by email, following them up with long phone calls. Then he facilitated every step of the way with local council processes and his extensive network of high-calibre trades-people.

“We couldn’t have asked for a more collaborative, creative, flexible and thoughtful house designer.”

— DIANE SMITH, ’PROMISED LAND’ GLENNIFER

But Guido’s professionalism and creativity was not limited to the initial design phase. He chased down practical information for us about the latest trends in solar energy and insulation, various kinds of farmed timber, mini-orb solutions, and finishings. Being open to new ideas meant that Guido was also open to our feedback and often vague ideas about the ‘feel’ we wanted to create in the house.

We were interested in interpreting an Australian vernacular – with lots of space and light to capture stunning outlooks onto forest and hills, using iron and timber.

His boundless energy and enthusiasm for that approach resulted in a beautifully designed house which has been a pleasure and privilege to live in.

These days when it is common to hear the misery anecdotes about house building, we are happy to be able to tell a ‘good news’ story about a wonderful success – one that was made possible by the extraordinary professionalism and creativity of Guido Eberding.”

The Blue House, Bellingen NSW 2454

Nemoral, the retirement house Guido designed for us.It was a very difficult brief because the fire restrictions and site coupled with what we wanted presented him with a number of unique challenges. The building was given a BAL-Flame Zone rating which imposes the most stringent restrictions on house design. In addition the site is in a steeply sloping forest. If these difficulties weren’t enough we also wanted:

→ an unorthodox floor plan with things like the kitchen adjacent to master bedroom, and the inclusion of car parking and dedicated work areas for hobbies within the house;

→ unusual detailing such as burnished concrete floors & bare steel beams to support lights, fans etc;
 → the house to be passive solar with minimal need for any active heating or cooling, good light levels and best use of views; and
→ the house to conform to what is known as “accessible housing” which means that it is capable of coping with the special needs of some people (such as wheel chair access) and is a place that also caters for the demands which result from growing old.

“The end result is a house we only ever dreamed of owning. Guido fulfilled the difficult brief wonderfully and as a result Nemoral is a beautiful, safe and rewarding place to live. It is warm in winter and cool in summer, has great views and makes the best use of the site. We are still constantly delighted at how the house fits our needs and desires like nothing else we have ever experienced.”

— GREG GOWING AND DEBBIE KENT, THE BLUE HOUSE

On top of this, as we were still working in Sydney when the house was being designed and built, we needed an architect who we could work with at a distance and who had good links to the local building community. Guido introduced us to Geoff, the builder who built Nemoral, and contacts like this were pivotal to the success of the build.

The end result is a house we only ever dreamed of owning. Guido fulfilled the difficult brief wonderfully and as a result Nemoral is a beautiful, safe and rewarding place to live. It is warm in winter and cool in summer, has great views and makes the best use of the site.

We are still constantly delighted at how the house fits our needs and desires like nothing else we have ever experienced.

A telling point for us is that we are now good friends with Guido and his family. We will always be grateful for the support, good humour, professionalism, skill and absence of “architect-ego” which he brought to the job of creating Nemoral. Thank you Guido Eberding.”

Guido’s services were recommended to us when we looked for a professional to help us complete the design of our house. It being the third house we built (or substantially renovated), we had drawn out the main spaces and had an idea of how we wanted movement to flow through the house. What we needed was an expert eye to take our concepts and make them work.

Guido was excellent to help with that. He was able to point out what would and would not work or, even better, how to make what might not have worked, work. We worked back and forth until we had a design that was ready to go. Guido then stayed with the project, guiding it through the council approval process, helping us find tradesmen, consulting with the tradesmen throughout the building and even mediating disputes.

“I cannot recommend Guido enough. He is efficient, effective and, most of all, a nice guy to work with.”
